November 14, 1862: Picket Duty
Our Regt. was detailed for Picket duty, it was my first experience in that branch of the service.
See the scanned diary page.
Picket duty was an important role for military encampments. The main role of the pickets was to monitor and protect the boundaries of the camp. This was often a quiet and uneventful duty, but pickets also scouted enemy positions and provided early warnings to the main camp about enemy attacks. Picket duty was shared by all soldiers and rotated through regiments.
